A bean bag chair without the beans? Online retailer Floyd’s has a Squishy answer – Furniture Today

Floyd’s new Squishy chair promises the comfort of a bean bag chair with a sustainable spin.
DETROIT — Floyd, a direct-to-consumer furniture maker focused on sustainable furniture and carbon neutrality, introduced the Squishy chair, which is similar to a traditional bean bag chair but made with repurposed post-consumer recycled plastic and foam offcuts from the sofa production process.
“More seating is one of the things we get asked for the most from our customers. And while we have more traditional seating coming down the line, this followed a response to a survey we sent out to customers that received a lot of love,” said Kyle Hoff, co-founder and CEO. “We learned that people wanted something that was really adaptable between spaces, and they wanted it to be non-directional for how it sat – both core in the design of the Squishy.”
Unlike bean bag chairs that are made with low-cost, environmentally damaging plastic beads that ultimately lose their form over time unless they are refilled, Floyd uses reclaimed off-cut foam from sofa production, according to the company.
“We wanted the color options to reflect the playful nature of the product, but at the same time, wanted to ensure each color could adapt seamlessly into any space. We chose a mix of vibrant, bold colors and neutrals: cloud, sea, sun and coral,” said Hoff, adding, “We don’t think good design has to be serious.”
Floyd partnered with the SEAQUAL Initiative to transform marine plastic and post-consumer plastic bottles diverted from landfill into yarn. Up to 50% of the fibers are created from what was sourced through this partnership.
The Squishy will be available for purchase on the company’s website for $695.
