The King of Monsters meets Neon Genesis Evangelion in a new mashup figure available exclusively for pre-order on the online Godzilla Store.
Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion are mashed together in a new figure now available for pre-order on the Japanese Godzilla Store.
The figure dubbed the "Evangelion Unit-01 G Awakening Form" sees the iconic purple Eva Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion boasting Godzilla's trademark dorsal fins and tail along with a set of sizable jaws.
Measuring about 38 centimeters tall and 36 centimeters long, the figure costs ¥35,200, or roughly $265, and has a scheduled release date of May 31, 2023. While intended for the Japanese market, the online Godzilla Store also accepts international orders through the website Buyee, giving kaiju fans across the world the chance to pre-order the hefty figure.
This merchandise is not the first collaboration that combined aspects of Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion — two franchises that have had a surprising number of crossovers ever since Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, signed on to direct Shin Godzilla in 2016. A bold reinvention of the kaiju king for a new era, Shin Godzilla depicted a Godzilla that was a force of nature, inspired by the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Anno was not the only creator with an anime background to work on the film — the movie's score was composed by Shirou Sagisu, who also worked on Evangelion and contained a number of motifs reminiscent of the classic series.
This connection between the two franchises was acknowledged with the "Godzilla vs. Evangelion" marketing campaign, which kicked off in 2016 to promote the film. Notable products tied into the campaign included Bandai figures of Mechagodzilla with the color schemes of various Evangelion units, a S.H. MonsterArts figure of Godzilla that featured the purple and green of Eva Unit-01, and a limited edition figure created by Japanese collectible company X-Plus that bore a strong resemblance to the current "G Awakening Form" for sale on the Godzilla Store.
Aside from toys, a pachinko game named P Godzilla vs. Evangelion: G Cell Awakening was also released. The game notably featured cutscenes that showed Godzilla and Eva Unit-01 fighting King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs. Evangelion: The Real 4-D, a 2019 interactive theater ride at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, later used this concept.
