How furniture retailers can protect their e-commerce websites

HIGH POINT – In a Home Furnishings Assn. webinar Thursday, furniture retailers learned about the biggest risks and challenges facing retail websites and selling products online.
Moderated by the HFA’s Mark Schumacher, the panel featured expertise from Jared Smolin, Synchrony cyber intelligence vice president; Jeff Douglas, Nebraska Furniture Mart director of e-commerce; and Lionel Wolberger, website accessibility expert.
The primary threats facing retailers online are attempts at fraud, the stealing of company and consumer data, and lawyers targeting user accessibility issues.
To prevent fraud and phishing scams, the panel discussed the importance of strong firewalls and the threat of compromising web servers, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. The panel recommended retailers educate their staff on what phishing expeditions look like, as staff error is the main way hackers can enter.
Retailers are ultimately responsible for ensuring customer data is encrypted, especially credit card info. The best way to remain safe is to match a card to its address, validate the address and check the CVC number.
In 2021, a record number of lawsuits were launched over website accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The panel urged retailers to take website accessibility complaints seriously, as most lawsuits start with one complaint. Once a year, retailers should plan an accessibility audit. Automated tools can also help, regularly scanning your site for accessibility compliance issues.
