GLENSIDE — Wawa celebrated the grand opening of a new store in Glenside.
Located at 200 Easton Road in Glenside, the store officially opened its doors at 8 a.m. on December 15. The opening was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Wawa mascot Wally Goose and confetti. The first 100 customers received limited-edition Wawa “Goose Vibes Only” t-shirts.
As part of the celebration, Wawa presented a $15,000 grant to Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania to support their Active-Duty Free Admission Program, which provides general free admission to Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Active duty and reservists, National Guard Members, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Corps and up to five family members.
The grand opening additionally featured Wawa’s customary Day Brightener ceremony where the company recognizes an Associate, a community member and local first responders making a bright impact in the community. First responders from Abington and Glenside and representatives from the PA National Guard participated in Wawa’s signature Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building competition, where they competed to see who could build the most hoagies in three minutes. Wawa concluded the competition by presenting $1,000 checks to each department’s charity of choice.
Chris Gheysens, Wawa’s President and CEO, said the company has a role in making the world a better place.
“Our store teams and associates deliver experiences and emotional connections with customers that go beyond what traditionally happens in a retail environment,” said Gheysens. “Simply put, they help make their communities happier and more connected.”
The store was the 39th new store to open in 2022. Andrew Courchain will serve as general manager, leading a team of approximately 50 associates. Associates will receive an hourly starting rate of $15 and health benefits and, once eligible, will participate in Wawa’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP).
The store is equipped with a built-to-order fresh food kitchen featuring Wawa’s signature hoagies, hot breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, the award-winning Wawa Coffee, the Sizzliä, a new line of specialty beverages and a beverage line of dairy products, juices and teas, plus packaged goods, fuel services and other amenities.
In addition to the in-person experience, customers can access Wawa products through mobile ordering, curbside pickup, delivery options and a new online catering service where food can be ordered for upcoming events at: www.wawacatering.com.
Wawa, Inc. began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming, and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, PA in 1902. The milk business was a huge success. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is a 24-hour stop for freshly prepared foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services and surcharge-free ATMs. Stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C. The stores offer a large fresh foodservice selection, including custom prepared hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks.
