That was disappointing news to Woodland Park Mayor Keith Kazmark on Friday afternoon.
In a virtual meeting, Amazon told Woodland Park officials that a combination of supply chain issues and the challenges of pulling together the complex technological components needed to run the “Just Walk Out Technology” was pushing back the opening date, Kazmark said.
Initially, it had been hoped the store would open earlier this year or at the latest, October. Its opening has been anxiously awaited by area residents.
“While out campaigning, we knocked on 2,000 doors since spring,” Kazmark said, about supporting local Democratic candidates running for Council. “When is Amazon opening was always in the top five questions asked,” he said.
Kazmark said he too is excited to see the store open. The new date should coincide with the other Amazon property in the borough, the new warehouse off McBride Avenue.
That too, Kazmark said, is expected to open in the first quarter of 2021.

When it opens next year, the grocery store joins the Amazon Fresh located in the Paramus Fashion Center mall on East Ridgewood Avenue, which opened in July. That site too was formerly a Fairway Market.
Both feature the Just Walk Out technology that skips the checkout lines. Customers can scan a QR code on the Amazon app, scan their palm through Amazon One or enter a credit card.
Once they’re inside the store, cameras and sensors track what they pick up and put back on the shelf. When they’re finished, they scan out and walk out, receiving a virtual receipt a few hours later. Amazon is also planning to open a store in Lodi at the former Kmart site on Memorial Drive.
The Woodland Park store is 59,350 square feet, and will employ hundreds, Alyse Bernal, a spokesperson for Amazon said.
